Interesting facts about Xylitol

Xylitol was discovered and produced in Finland during the war years in response to their sugar shortages. It was synthesised from the bark of birch trees. It is now made from sugar cane bagasse or from maize cobs. It is a 5-carbon sugar polyol that is metabolised in the liver, supplying only 40% of the calories of sugar.

Xylitol has none of the negative side effects of some non-nutritive sweeteners but in fact promotes health.

Hospitality Experience :

Advantages of using Xylitol

  • Diabetes and Insulin Resistance (Syndrome X): Xylitol does not stimulate the release of insulin so is totally safe for use by diabetics and those with insulin resistance.

  • Weight control: Xylitol has a very low Glycaemic Load and contains only 40% of the calories found in sugar.

  • Candida: Because Xylitol does not support the growth of yeast, it reduces Candida infections.

  • ADD and Hyperactivity: Children eating Xylitol do not demonstrate the 'sugar-high' reactions.

  • Healthy teeth: Xylitol does not support the growth of the bacteria Streptococcus mutans responsible for tooth decay, but stimulates resorption of essential minerals in the teeth.

  • Middle-ear infections: Another of the Streptococcal bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae causes middle ear infection. Xylitol prevents growth of this bacterium.

  • Osteopororsis: It has been suggested by Finnish researchers that Xylitol has bone density enhancing properties

  • Acidity: Xylitol reduces acidity in the digestive tract.
