GREEN ROOFING WITH LIVE PLANTS
Traditional building materials absorb heat from the sun and re-emit it as heat, making cities at least 4 degrees hotter than surrounding areas. Green roofs have been found to dramatically improve roof insulation and in a study by Environmental Canada, they found a 26% reduction in summer cooling and a 26% reduction in winter heating needs. Reduce heat and cooling energy costs; reduce average temperatures during the summer, increase roof life span, reduce storm water run-off, filter pollutants and carbon dioxide out of the air, help to insulate for sound as well as heat.
TYPES OF GREEN ROOFS
Green roofs can be categorised as semi intensive, intensive or extensive, depending on the depth of planting medium and amount of maintenance they need. Traditional roof gardens are considered intensive because they are labour intensive, requiring irrigation, feeding and other maintenance. Intensive roofs are more park like with easy access and my include anything from kitchen herbs to small trees.
Extensive green roofs, by contact, are designed to be virtually self sustaining and should require only a minimum of maintenance, perhaps a once yearly weeding or an application of slow release fertiliser.
Extensive roofs are usually only accessed for maintenance. They can be established on a very thin layer of soil; even a thin layer of rock wool laid directly onto a watertight roof can support a planting of Sedum species and mosses.

Hospitality Experience : |
With the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa just over a year away, some of the major projects for Derbigum at the moment are the stadiums.
Alongside this, the company is also working on the Monte Casino, the R1.4 billion gaming, retail and leisure complex in Gauteng, which is an ongoing development.
"Melrose Arch is another of the major projects that we are looking at and we have been involved with that from just after the first phase," says Larsen. "After that first phase we moved in with our Derbigum product and have continued to follow it through." |
